80’S OVERDRIVE is an arcade racing game that wants to represent eighties titles. The developer has even dedicated this game to the fans of the eighties. The game is not new and first released for the 3DS console and later became available for other platforms. Now the game has just arrived for Xbox platforms and we are going to review it.

First of all, this game is impressive from an artistic point of view. The game revives the memories of Sega Mega Drive and SNES games, in this sense, it is very nostalgic. But the music is not low quality and several pieces of synth music with the mood of eighties pop music are included. You can choose these tracks as you like during the races.

80’S OVERDRIVE’s graphics have excellent pixel arts, but some things are poorly done, like the way the buildings approach the camera. However, the game’s graphics have nothing 3D, and everything from trees to people and cars is designed as detailed 2D sprites. It makes you feel like you are traveling back in time.

Fast & Furious

The gameplay is simple but has more details than retro games. Your main task is to reach the destination as quickly as possible, but some features have made the game more modern. In the main mode, you have a series of races ahead of you, and by getting a better position, you can access the next more difficult ones. By earning money, you can buy newer cars and upgrade them to have, for example, nitro, more speed, or better steering. The number of races and length of the game is acceptable, but unfortunately, the variety of cars and even the environments is very limited.

80’S OVERDRIVE has a track editor. In this section, you can adjust various settings from the number of traffic cars to the condition of the roads, but the game does not give you much motivation to mess with this section. After all, the game is 2D work, and you are not free to be vastly creative in making the tracks.
The game also has a Time Attack mode. You must race a long distance in a limited time and set your record. To not run out of time, you can also take turns among the traffic cars. But the physics of the game is not very accurate and you may accidentally have many accidents. However, reaching the checkpoints also gives you a lot of time.

In general, it can be said that 80’S OVERDRIVE is very valuable for fans of retro games, considering the price of ten dollars on Xbox platforms. Of course, you can buy the game on different platforms like Nintendo Switch or PC.
