Q.U.B.E. is a series of first-person puzzle games we first saw in the year 2012. After two years, that game received an improved Director’s Cut version and finally, a few years later, Q.U.B.E. 2 came to the market. This series attracted the attention of critics and gamers because of its creative puzzles and maybe its atmosphere that was similar to Portal games. It seemed that the developer should move on to the third part of the game, but to our disbelief, they introduced the remake of the first part called Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary.

Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary is the first game plus its Director’s Cut, which is now included in one package and various changes have been applied to them, Although the core gameplay is still the same as before. You control a person whose hands you only see. With the help of the special spacesuit he is wearing, he can interact with the environment and as a result, remove all kinds of puzzles from his way. The game includes seven sectors plus a special sector for the remake. These sectors are divided into different rooms. Each room has its puzzles that become increasingly difficult and complex until the end of the game.

You control everything with your hands

The most important mechanism to solve the puzzles is to move the cube-shaped objects that are scattered in the rooms. In the game, there are various colored cubes, each of which shows a specific reaction to your pointing at them. For example, red cubes only increase and decrease in height in a certain range, or blue cubes throw everything that hits them like a spring. In addition to these, there are also switches for special actions such as rotating the walls or making certain spheres appear in the environment.

The developer has been able to create very creative puzzles by combining the mentioned items. Some puzzles are just to crack the obstacles and some give the game a platformer style. Also, although the physics of the game is not very realistic, many of the puzzles are physics-based which is very interesting. In general, the game can satisfy those who are looking for numerous challenging puzzles. Of course, this is provided that you have not played the original version before. The game indeed has an all-new sector, different music tracks, additional collectible items, etc. The developers have enhanced the game puzzles based on people’s feedback to improve the gameplay too. But none of these will probably make you restart a game that has already been released twice and you have probably gone to the end. Maybe if you haven’t experienced Q.U.B.E. 2 you should go for it instead.

Not on Switch

Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary may not have improved much in content, but it has sweetened a lot on the graphics side. In the early version of the game, everything looked very flat and the atmosphere was cartoony. But in its remake, the lighting creates more believable scenes. More patience and taste are used in the design of the environment and there are no flat and soulless surfaces anymore. We played the game on the Nintendo Switch console, which cannot be a good representative of the game’s technical graphics due to its low hardware power. Even though the default resolution and frame rate of the game are lower than on other platforms, we could easily see obvious drops. So if you have another platform that the game was released for, you should try that version.

Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary is a respectable game for fans of its genre, provided that you have not experienced at least the Director’s Cut version before. But if you have only played the original version in the past, you can witness at least a more understandable story in the 10th Anniversary remake. You can buy this game on all available platforms for twenty dollars, which is a fair price.
