The 2013 film World War Z changed the public imagination about a zombie apocalypse with its portrayal of a world overrun by a relentless horde of fast undead. The film’s gripping narrative of human resilience against insurmountable odds captivated audiences worldwide and set the stage for a video game adaptation. Released in 2019, the original World War Z game expanded upon the cinematic universe, offering cooperative gameplay focused on surviving wave after wave of zombie attacks. It’s the kind of formula successfully tried in other games too.  World War Z: Aftermath upgrade builds upon this foundation, introducing new elements while retaining the core appeal of the main game. So, if you liked the main game, it is a good time to return.

Aftermath excels in delivering an immersive and chaotic gameplay experience. The game’s signature feature remains its overwhelming zombie hordes, which create a palpable sense of urgency and panic. Players must constantly be on their toes, adapting to the ever-changing battlefield as wave after wave of undead closes in. Here, introducing a first-person perspective enhances immersion, placing players directly in the heart of the action.

This way, every gunshot, explosion, sound, and guttural groan reverberates through the audience’s senses. Also, the melee combat is now more efficient, and you can rely on it to plan your fight against your undead enemies. Sadly, there is a weird problem for your guns in first-person mode that is the lack of aiming down the sight. We hope there will be a fix for that very soon.

The game’s two new maps offer a diverse range of environments, each with it is unique challenges and opportunities. From the claustrophobic confines of urban ruins to the wide-open spaces of the city, players must constantly adapt their strategies to survive. The level design is commendable, incorporating a variety of verticality and horizontal space to encourage strategic movement and quick maneuvers. Especially in the snowy Kamchatka region, the freezing damage adds to the strategic layer of the gameplay.

Survival in World War Z

World War Z has always been a game best enjoyed with friends, and Aftermath continues this tradition. Cooperative gameplay is at the heart of the experience, as players work together to overcome the relentless onslaught of zombies. The game’s progression system rewards teamwork, encouraging players to specialize in different classes and support each other. Whether it’s a medic healing fallen comrades, a fixer repairing defenses, or a hellraiser dealing devastating damage, each role is crucial to the team’s survival.

The thrill of coordinating with friends to fend off a horde of zombies is unparalleled. Players must communicate effectively, share resources, and work together to survive. Unfortunately, the game’s online matchmaking system is generally unreliable, making it lengthy to find teammates and dive into the action. On the other hand, your AI bot friends are a little dumb and can’t make the right moves to be helpful. it can disrupt the gameplay experience, but if you have friends ready to play, you should be fine.

Beyond the Surface

While the core gameplay loop of World War Z: Aftermath is undeniably thrilling, the game falls short in certain areas. The visual presentation, while serviceable, does not match the level of detail and polish found in many modern titles. The character models and environments lack the level of fidelity many would expect, which can be a noticeable drawback for players with high-end PCs and current-gen consoles.

Moreover, the narrative falls short against the relentless action of the game. While the original film explored the human condition in the face of overwhelming adversity, Aftermath focuses primarily on survival mechanics. The lack of a compelling story is a missed opportunity to deepen the player’s connection to the world and characters. So it is up to you to make your own survival story.
