We live in an era where the brilliant success of Soulslike games (like Moonscars) has dazzled people’s eyes. Just this year, the Elden Ring was able to show that the market is not tired of these types of games, and also displays more enthusiasm for them, with its excellent sales and reaping the awards for the best game of the year. It is natural that in such an atmosphere, different game developers try to attract a part of this share of the market’s attention. It caused the release of various big and small titles that use elements of Soulslike in different genres. From the AAA Star Wars game of Respawn Entertainment to independent games like Tunic.

Another one of these games that were introduced surprisingly and attracted attention is Moonscars. Moonscars was developed by an Unknown game studio called Black Mermaid. Humble Games is its publisher, and remember almost all the independent games they published are much worthy. This game is a 2D Metroidvania action game that heavily utilizes Soulslike elements.

In this game, you play the role of a clay and bone warrior named Gray Irma who is looking for her creator. The story is more straightforward than a game like Demon Souls, but it has its symbols and secrets. To better understand the story, you must read the dialogues carefully to comprehend the whole idea. In general, we can say that everything is acceptable about the story and the game narrates an interesting dark fantasy story considering its genre.

Beautiful in a dark manner

One of the main strengths of this game is its dark and stunning atmosphere despite being 2D. In this context, Moonscars can be compared with games like blasphemous. If we want to compare, we should say Moonscars presents a sad atmosphere but is less violent. Moonscars is not unnecessarily violent but wants to show an apocalyptic atmosphere in a fantasy world. This reaches its peak in the parts of the map that are displayed in Silhouette.

As we said, Moonscars is a Metroidvania. It means that you have an integrated and large map at your disposal, the different parts of which are gradually open for you. There are various hidden items available on this map that you should explore and find. It is essential to obtain these items Because the improvement of attributes such as the amount of health is possible by these items. Fortunately, the game map is not so convoluted that it confuses you, nor is it so straightforward that it seems lazy. Also, the navigation of the environment is easy and convenient thanks to checkpoints and the improvement of the movement capabilities of the game’s main character.

The most important part of the game is naturally its combats. This element is not particularly bad, but it is not amazing too. Gray Irma has only one long sword with simple and special attacks and, she also uses parry and dash abilities to defend herself. Gray Irma’s special attacks are interesting. Each of them has its weaknesses and strengths, but your main attacks become repetitive and, perhaps boring. it is because you are not given any other weapons to choose from.

You can use the environment to your advantage

The developer has tried to compensate for combat problem with the superpowers of Witchery, which are also very diverse. Of course, in using Witchery, you are limited to the amount of Ichor bar that usually fills by hitting enemies. On the other hand, the Ichor bar is used to refill Gray Irma’s health. it will eventually cause you to not be able to use Witchery much. For upgrading the Witchery powers, you must collect Bonepowder by defeating enemies, which you lose if you are killed, like in Soulslike games.

One of the main complaints that some people have about this game is that it is difficult, especially when fighting the bosses of the game. The statement that the game is not easy is true, you should note that for a title that falls under the category of Soulslike games, Moonscars is not only not very difficult, but it is much easier to advance in it, and only some bosses can disturb you.

Moonscars has appeared as a great game, and the only disappointing problem we encountered was the performance issues on the Nintendo Switch console. We recommend this game to fans of Metroidvania games that looking for more than ten hours of fun at a fair price, provided that they can tolerate the difficulty of Soulslike games.
